Apply for a council tax discount or exemption for annexes

If you live in an annexe then you will be exempt from paying council tax if the annexe:

• is separately banded for council tax but forms part of another property and a dependent relative is living in it as their main home
• can't be let separately from the property without breaching planning permission
• is occupied only by students or people under the age of 18 

If an annexe is not exempt, you might be able to get a 50% discount if:

• the annexe is part of a single property and is being used as part of the main home by the person liable to pay the council tax
• you are a relative of the person responsible for paying the council tax on the main property and the annexe is your main home
